Our Visitor Tip of The Month For December 2000

Float Advertising; Positive Image; Low Cost

Most small towns have some kind of parade or downtown Christmas celebration. If your town has such a celebration consider sponsoring a float in the local parade. It's usually inexpensive, gives you business name good visibility to people from outside your local advertising area and shows your support for local civic events. All in all a very positive way to advertise at a relatively low cost.

Our Visitor Tip of The Month For August 2000 Comes From Brian Williams

Marketing A Real Estate Agency

Hi Tom

A month or so ago, some friends started a real estate agency and decided to use the local school to market themselves. They donated a box of envelopes to the school in which to place the learners' end of term report cards (it was about the end of the term examinations) in return for placing a flyer of the existence of the new real estate firm in the envelopes. They also decided to sponsor the paper for the schools end of term letter to the parents.

Needless to say, within days, the telephone started ringing to enquire about properties on the market.

All in all, a very cost effective way to market your service business, don't you think?

Thanks for a great site.

Brian Williams

How To Determine Your Pricing

Most people starting out in business cannot sell so they "give it away" with low prices arguing their low overhead justifies the low price. Every successful business ALWAYS charges as much as the market will stand -while keeping costs to a minimum. Do market research on what competitors A, B, & C, are charging for Products 1, 2, 3 Etc.

Draw a simple matrix Competitors down the left and Products across the top. What's the average price for products 1,2,3, Etc? Now decide YOUR proposed selling price. Aim for the upper quartile!

Save on advertising with Per-Order Ads

If you have a product that you can sell in short commercials like, CD's or magic brooms, then ask your station about per-order ads. Per-order ads are a great way to get pay as you go advertising. The station collects the money, deducts the cost of the ads and sends you the rest.

Bonus: You can point to your TV commercials as good advertising to also put your products in stores.

Our Visitor Tip of The Month For May 2000

How Cheaply Can We Do It?

Few business owners ask, "How well can we do it?" Most ask how cheaply can we do it. Don't get me wrong. I'm all for saving money whenever possible. However, there are times when doing things right instead of doing them cheaply makes sense.

I'm sure you wouldn't pick a store location in the worst part of town (low rent) and expect business to come to you. There are times when cost should come into play but it should not be the first and only consideration. Be frugal but also be smart. A larger investment today may pay big dividends tomorrow.

Use The Back Of Your Business Card For Big Profits

Put some useful information on the back of your business card that makes the card worth keeping. If you are a politician, for example, you might have a list of the voting places on your card. A mortgage lender might have the things you need to assemble for a loan. Such as tax returns for the past three years, job history, etc.

Tie Your Name To PSA Messages On Radio

I know you've all heard them. Those Public Service Announcements (PSA's) for all sorts of good causes. If you are a current customer of a radio station, ie you are running ads on their station, ask them if they would consider adding your tag line at the end of some PSA's. "This Public Service Announcement was brought to you by..your company name." Since the station is donating the production of the PSA there should be no cost involved to ad your tag line at the end. You get one more exposure and a positive image in the community and the station keeps an advertiser happy.

Our Visitor Tip of The Month For February 2000

Here's a tip from Paul Souder of Harrisonburg, VA.

How To Use The Yellow Pages For Market Research

My local public library has yellow page phone directories from all over the country. Whenever I get a new client in a category that I'm not familiar with -- I spend an hour in the library perusing those yellow pages, making copies of sample ads, taking notes, getting up to speed with how other businesses are marketing / advertising / positioning themselves.

It's a quick and dirty way to review The Good / The Bad / The Ugly -- marketing research on a shoestring. Usually yields several niche possibilities / benefit headlines / "industry jargon" templates. This quick research opens the door for some interesting conversations with my new client.

I recommend it to any Mom-n-Pop BizOwner looking for ideas.

Have a great day,

Paul Souder

Our Visitor Tip of The Month For January 2000

Ask Employees To Shop The Competition

Once of the best ways for your employees to know how the competition does business is to have them shop the competition and make a report to the rest of the company as to what they found. Sometimes the competition does things that you may want to start doing. Mostly they are doing things you want to avoid doing.

If the competition knows you they may not know an aunt or uncle or cousin. Have the employees ask a family member to do the shop. Give them a gift or company discount for their efforts.
